What to Do When Your Boss Gives You a Poor Work Performance Review

What to Do When Your Boss Gives You a Poor Work Performance Review What to Do When Your Boss Gives You a Poor Work Performance Review What to Do When Your Boss Thinks You're Not Meeting Expectations This is what to do when you wind up on an alternate page from your manager with regards to your performance. You've been shipping along grinding away, showing up on schedule, getting your cup of morning joe, working through the morning into the evening, and afterward you heading home in the wake of a monotonous day's worth of effort. Apparently, everything is working out in a good way. You don't really bounce all over with happiness every day about your activity, however you despite everything put in the energy and exertion required and feel you're accomplishing acceptable work. At that point, shockingly, your administrator requests to meet with you one evening to talk about your presentation. After the gathering, you feel crushed and amazed in light of the fact that your administrator isn't content with your present degree of execution. Or then again perhaps it's the ideal opportunity for your yearly execution audit, and your chief's imprints don't take after a similar shining imprints you gave about your exhibition. These situations can happen to potentially anyone. At the point when your work environment desires vary from those of your managers, it can cause pressure and strain for all. Clearly, the least demanding presentation conversations are where the director and worker have comparative points of view on the representative's exhibition. Be that as it may, it regularly happens this isn't the situation. In the event that this transpires, think about the accompanying tips on the best way to continue or handle the circumstance when you may get a terrible showing audit. Intellectually set yourself up before the discussion Prior to entering the gathering, reveal to yourself that paying little mind to how the gathering goes, it's only a gathering around one person's point of view of your exhibition. Execution conversations are basically a route for you to get data and criticism about how you're acting in a specific situation inside the organization. Is anything but an assessment of your own value or how you would act in an alternate position or with an alternate organization. Try not to think about the criticism too literally. Rather, utilize the data as you decide to improve at your particular employment and communicating with associates. Investigate the mirror It's difficult to concede that we may be battling grinding away or that our exhibition isn't what we'd like for it to be. In the wake of showing some kindness to heart with yourself, get clear on whether there is legitimacy in your administrator's point of view. On the off chance that there is, and you'd prefer to stay in your job, make a move to improve. Think before you respond While accepting a helpless work execution survey, it can mix a few feelings that can rapidly surface. On the off chance that this transpires, give a valiant effort to take a full breath and tally to three preceding you respond with an upheaval that may exacerbate the situation. It's ideal to require some investment to tune in to your director's information and permit yourself a couple of days to process the data before responding or reacting. Request an improvement plan On the off chance that you accept there is legitimacy to your chief's focuses, request an improvement plan that traces explicit objectives and targets. Ensure you line up with your supervisor on explicit approaches to improve your work execution. The objectives and destinations ought to be explicit and quantitative with a predetermined time in which to contact them the more explicit, the more clear it will be that you have met the objectives as mentioned. Keep the correspondence open Inquire as to whether you could plan some normal gatherings with the person in question so you can talk about your advancement and the present status of execution. Having ordinary interchanges with your chief is gainful paying little mind to execution, however particularly when execution is a worry. Related: Professionalism in the Workplace: How and When to Ask for Feedback Look for preparing and instruction Approach your administrator for preparing or recommendations on assets that could assist you with improving in the work territories that were recognized as your difficult regions. You may likewise need to do an online scan or approach your friends for recommendations. This kind of activity exhibits activity and shows that you really care about your work execution. Approach others for an evaluation On the off chance that you can't help contradicting your administrator's evaluation of your exhibition, think about approaching some confided in companions and friends for their points of view. You're searching for legitimate criticism to survey whether others see what your administrator sees. In view of their input, you may recognize zones for development or changes you have to make in your present position. You may likewise choose you have to change to another position or an alternate organization out and out. Work with a profession or individual mentor In case you're battling grinding away and really need to improve, consider employing a vocation or individual mentor to support you. Do an online quest for a nearby vocation or individual mentor in your general vicinity or inquire as to whether they have any proposals. Numerous mentors work remotely by means of telephone (this is my favored technique) so you may wind up growing your inquiry past your neighborhood locate the correct mentor to meet your requirements and financial plan. Be straightforward and request what you need You probably won't be shocked by your supervisor's dissatisfaction in light of the fact that the inclination is common. In an ongoing Interact/Harris Poll of around 1,000 U.S. laborers, 57 percent revealed that absence of clear bearings was only one of a few correspondence gives that forestalled successful authority. In the event that you'd prefer to remain in your present position longer and need to endeavor to make it work, be straightforward with your administrator and request what you need, including explanation of jobs and duties. It's difficult to accomplish your work successfully in case you're not satisfactory regarding what you should do. Be open if individual issues are affecting your activity In the event that the presentation concerns are generally later and they're because of some close to home issues you're managing, similar to a separation, individual or family ailment, or some other life-affecting occasion, think about imparting the features of this to your supervisor. You don't have to go into a great deal of detail, however life occurs and numerous chiefs will give you some reality to manage your own issues, understanding that your exhibition will come back to ordinary once the issues are leveled out or have been managed. Wave the white banner and search for another position Employment fit is urgent for profession achievement. On the off chance that you find that your exhibition is enduring in light of the fact that you're not content with your present position or association, at that point begin getting your resume and promoting materials together so you can go after open jobs and with associations that are an ideal choice for you. Credit it to a learning experience One of every two grown-ups exits their position to escape from their supervisor eventually in their vocation, as announced in a Gallup investigation of roughly 7,200 U.S. grown-ups. In certain occasions, you may be lamentable enough to be left with a helpless director, and there's not a ton you can do about it yet proceed onward. If so for you, look at this as a learning experience about what not to do on the off chance that you become a director one day. Pursue the more responsible option Pursue the more responsible option paying little heed to what occurs. Individuals will recall when you manage circumstances with as much effortlessness, honesty, and nobility as could be expected under the circumstances. They likewise recollect when you don't deal with things in such a manner, which could hurt you over the long haul. Some of the time a worker's point of view of their exhibition will be not the same as that of a manager's. On the off chance that this transpires, be proactive to improve or assess your exhibition to spare yourself a great deal of migraines and grief over the long haul. You'll have the option to choose if it's justified, despite all the trouble to make a move to improve your exhibition or if it's smarter to settle on the decision to leave your present situation voluntarily before the organization requests that you leave. Tips To Confidentially Update Linkedin When You Are In Transition And Are Still Employed

Tips to Confidentially Update LinkedIn When You are in Transition and are Still Employed LinkedIn Logo by Shekhar Sahu of Flickr Many employees fear that their boss is watching their every move on social media and are afraid to update their LinkedIn profiles. Other employees update their profiles and openly express an interest in new career opportunities while they are employed. The first group of employees are limiting their ability to promote themselves. The second group risks being fired by their employer. Depending on your employer’s social media policies, a LinkedIn update can land you in trouble. John Flexman was an executive at a gas exploration firm based in England. He uploaded his CV to LinkedIn and checked the box indicating an interest in “career opportunities.” His company accused him of inappropriate social media use and ordered him to remove his CV. Flexman thought this was unreasonable and resigned. Flexman’s situation is not common in the United States because employers do not own your LinkedIn profile as they do in the United Kingdom. Nevertheless, there are cases where employers have monitored their employees’ use of LinkedIn. It is possible to confidentially use LinkedIn during your  job search while you are still employed.   Promoting yourself on LinkedIn IS part of the job search A complete and branded LinkedIn profile is the best way to connect with others, stay relevant, and expand your  network. However, many people are afraid to update their LinkedIn profile because they fear their employer will become suspicious of their activities. This robs a person of the opportunity to truly optimize their profile in a way that will generate more qualified leads, better opportunities, and will put their career on autopilot. Many of my clients have received offers for promotions within their companies because they have effectively articulated their value. They promote their value as an employee while promoting their company. Content is your greatest asset on LinkedIn! Do not be afraid to post industry-relevant content and to share your knowledge in groups. Balance the content you share in order to promote yourself and your company. Share the stories where you saved the day, but also use your status updates to express gratitude for being surrounded by and supported by a great team or leadership. Your next boss would love to picture him or herself on the receiving end of such praise. Keep your praise authentic and make sure other people would be able to validate what you say as truth. Use status updates to simultaneously promote yourself, your colleagues, and your employer. Update your status by writing about problems you solved, your nuggets of practical wisdom, and giving colleagues the credit for a great performance.   Keep your direct job search activities hidden When you use LinkedIn to job search and you are employed, do not openly announce your job search-related activities. This means not mentioning you are looking for a new employer in your status updates and in groups. While it is better to find a job while you are still employed, we know from our results that with a powerful and effective brand campaign and system you can viably land a new job within 10 to 12 weeks. Although  it  is possible to turn off all broadcasts of your LinkedIn activity, these decisions are often made from fear and limit your success. The questionable activity to your employer comes from adding connections from the competition. If your profile is locked down to the point where almost nothing is visible, your employer may become suspicious. You also miss the opportunity to network or to be found by potential employers who are actively looking for someone with your skills, and perhaps even your network. Adding connections from your company’s competition may raise red flags with your employer. In this type of scenario you do want to practice discretion, especially if you plan to transition to a competitor. If you are connecting with the competition, view the profiles of others anonymously by changing what others see when you have viewed their profile. Temporarily turn off broadcast activities when you follow companies for whom you want to work. This action is temporary because you do not want to alert your current employer to a direct job search activity. Otherwise, keep  notifications on when you engage  in your regular  LinkedIn activity to raise your visibility on the network. Joining job search groups will alert others to your intent to find a new employer while you are still employed. Avert this by not allowing anyone to see you belong to job search groups and make sure these groups  are not visible on your profile by changing the order they are displayed. Also, temporarily turn off notifications for groups whenever you join a job search group. This allows you to freely join groups without notifying your network. If you are using a company e-mail address on LinkedIn, switch to a private e-mail address immediately. Leaving your employer means that you will lose access to your e-mail, and as a result your LinkedIn account. In fact, I recommend this action even if you do not have plans to leave your company. Anything could happen!   Imagine a few scenarios:     Which scenario would you choose? You do not want to scream to the world that you are actively searching for work while you are currently employed. Carefully updating your LinkedIn profile will make your transition quicker and  pain-free.

The PC filters for watchword matches. Imitate the language from the ad. Use the associations site to educate you regarding the most significant qualities they seek. Then, fuse them into your resume. Ive expounded on how uninvolved employment searchers (individuals who arent really going after positions) are desirable. This force technique idea you put something out and they will come plays on the way that organizations appear to get a kick out of the chance to enlist individuals who dont come searching for occupations. The last two focuses in Zimmermans article center around the meeting and the activity searchers desires: Dont talk such a great amount about yourself in the interview. PODCAST 9 How to get the most out of tech when job searching Viewpoint careers advice blog

PODCAST 9 How to get the most out of tech when job searching How can you use technology to enhance your job search? Listen to our podcast to find out: Podcast notes: Can you talk us through the options that exist when applying for a job at the moment? The short answer is that there are a lot of different ways that businesses can choose to advertise a job. This can range from the job being advertised on a companys own website, to individual recruitment company websites, to job boards to social propositions like LinkedIn and Xing. To explain this in a bit more detail, recruitment agencies typically have a website, as well as an app or mobile responsive website so that jobseekers can search and apply for jobs online. Job boards are a more recent digital-only phenomenon.  Examples such as Indeed or Monster are commonly known as aggregators. Just to explain the term aggregator a little more these are really comparison websites they list jobs from a lot of different recruitment agencies or direct from businesses on a single website, or job board. And when a jobseeker clicks on one of the jobs on the aggregator website they often get sent through to that recruiter or business website. The user experience that they offer is solely digital, and all about offering a larger volume of jobs than an individual recruiter can. And then the final way is via social platforms like LinkedIn. LinkedIn started out as a networking product which enabled people to connect with each other, but, over time, their product proposition has evolved quite a lot and has broadened to include jobs that have been posted either by a recruiter or direct from a company. Of course a lot of us start our job search journey on a search engine, and predominantly on Google. From your search results on Google you can find yourself on a recruiter’s website or a company website and apply for a job from there. Do you think that there is too much choice for candidates now? Arguably yes, but I think on balance having choice is a good thing. All recruitment agencies and job boards will want to get you to register with them and send a CV through. And if you take the time to do this, and upload your CV onto the recruitment agency website or job board then you will actually save time for yourself in the future, because the next time that you go back, your CV will already be there and you’ll be able to apply straight from there. Aggregators like Monster and Indeed, as well as LinkedIn have made the user experience easier for jobseekers. So we now have, LinkedIn Easy Apply and Indeed Fast Apply, and it’s the same advice job boards and recruitment websites too. The same job title can mean different things in different companies, so it’s worth varying your search terms too to maximise your job search results. What would be a good example of this? Well I think if we look at marketing for example, it might be worth searching say Marketing Executive, Marketing Manager and Marketing Analyst because all the roles that could come back in the search results may be relevant to you. So it’s using similar, but slightly different and nuanced search terms to get the most search results back. So how should a job seeker decide which job boards to target? The job seeking process can be time consuming and time can be a rare commodity for people these days. It might be that as part of your general job searching you always find yourself on the same job board or the same recruitment agency websites, possibly because they have the most suitable jobs that are most relevant for you. If so, then it would make sense to register with these sites to make it easier when you return there time and again. Your CV will be saved and you can apply for jobs in the future more quickly. Or through word of mouth, or perhaps more likely, through your social network, you may have heard from a friend or colleague who had a really great job application experience and so you can choose to register with the same recruitment agency or platform as them, and then hopefully when you find an opportunity that you apply for, you will have a similar successful and good experience. And what is your advice for candidates? Take the time. Simple as that. Its not really any different advice to what you would do in a non-digital situation. If you put the effort into creating your CV, or tailoring your CV for different roles and writing cover letters, then you are much more likely to find a job. So spend time looking at job details, spend time refining you CV and your cover letter to make sure it matches the job you’re requesting. If there is a consultant available then give them a call to discuss an open position and perhaps your longer term career ambitions too. So much of our time is spent in the digital world but it is just as important to prepare, take care and pay attention to detail when applying for jobs online. What is the mobile experience like for candidates applying for jobs? Thats an interesting question and the mobile experience does vary hugely across different websites and apps. So mobile usage in general is different across different ages and demographics. Mobile behaviour is that browsing activity which is easy to do on the move.  So just think about how much time you spend on your phone whilst commuting on the bus or train or whilst you are waiting to meet a friend for example. And the second reason is because a CV isn’t always available from a phone. Now it is possible to apply for a job on different websites without a CV but you should remember that this might not provide a recruitment consultant or in-house recruiter with much information about yourself, or as much information as you could possibly give them. And if a consultant has hundreds of applications to look through it is much easier to discard someone who they know the least about. So my advice would be if at all possible then keep a copy of your CV in a cloud environment, for example in Dropbox, or Google drive, etc. Is applying online not rather anonymous? Yes it is and if you don’t hear back about your application it can be frustrating too. Job boards and aggregators only have a digital platform sitting behind their website there are no people to talk to or get advice from. With recruitment agencies, a plus point is that their knowledgeable and informed recruiters are able to provide advice and help you in your job search and career progression. Therefore on a recruitment agency website you will often see details on their job pages about the actual recruitment consultant for the job so that you can get in touch with them. It’s also usually possible to track your application online, too. When you apply for a job you will typically see a confirmation screen showing you that your application has been submitted and you will also receive an email confirming that you application has been sent. Then in order to track any progress, you should be able to log into the website, you should be able to access an account area just for you. And you will see a record of the job, or jobs that you have applied for. If you are selected for interview you would then expect to receive a follow up email and also be see any status updates on that application, again in the account area of this website. Online chat is something that Hays has introduced for some of our markets. It is a good example of another option for jobseekers as there is a real person available to assist with answers to queries or help with an application process. This is a digital feature which is often expected in banking or in retail sectors, so we are all used to chatting online in various parts of our lives, and it is now considered to be part of the overall customer service, and is definitely a positive customer communications channel for us. And all of this is where the joined up nature of online and offline is really visible they are both part of the overall customer experience and need to be cohesive. Apart from searching and applying for jobs, what else is available for jobseekers and businesses online? We always tend to think about jobs being at the core of websites and the online recruitment world, and whilst they definitely are the centrepiece, there is a lot more on offer too. Job alert emails is an obvious thing to mention. The majority of recruiters and job boards offer the facility for you to sign up to job alerts. This is generally based on the search term that you have searched with, and results in you receiving an email on, probably, a daily basis containing jobs that match your search. So, going back to my previous point about using good keywords, we used the marketing example, it may be valuable to sign up for job alerts using similar, but slightly different, search terms. Then there are hundreds of tools and digital experiences available, examples are, salary checkers, CV creators and career development checklists and several websites have some of these tools. But alone the may not actually provide much value for you. A lot of them are really good, don’t get me wrong, but just by themselves they are not necessarily going to be the most help for you. What is more helpful, in my opinion, is the amount of content to watch and read, and some recruitment websites include the ability to read trusted career advice and download white papers applicable to certain sectors or HR themes. For example having world-leading content from the Hays Journal available in digital format, and also blog posts from the Hays Viewpoint blog, these are really valuable in terms of being able to prepare for the job search, application and interview process. In a world where video is the means by which so much of our online activity is consumed, there are also things like webinars that you can sign-up for on various topics and watch either in real-time or on demand after the event. Facebook Live and Periscope are also being used to greater effect for live-streaming. I couldn’t answer this question without briefly mentioning social networks as well, obviously everybody is active on different social networks and from a jobseeker point of view, you should be able to read, watch, listen and access all relevant content for you via the most appropriate channels and devices that you use. I am an active LinkedIn user, so I should be able to access this via my phone then? Absolutely and it will be at the time of your choosing. When you want to and how you want to, and in the way you want it to be delivered. How do you think the online job seeking experience will change in the future? I think there will be a few changes. That like all industries, the online experience in recruitment will become more mobile. It is also worth mentioning Artificial Intelligence, (or, AI for short). It is talked about a lot and there is a lot of excitement about the potential, as well as fear as to where the technology involving bots and algorithms could take us. But the key benefit I can see is that this potential can be harnessed and used to enhance the experience for all of us. And my final point would be to say that this is not just about a race to have the best technology. As already mentioned, the online experience for jobseekers needs to be robust and secure, so that you can access websites you need at the time you need them. But more value comes from having this supported and enhanced by the best people and advice too. We all know that technology will continue to evolve and provide excellent experiences, but having a trusted recruitment consultant available to assist you is a definite plus point for jobseekers. What is the best piece of career advice that you could offer our listeners? In terms of online and digital, you should make sure that you have consistency across all of the websites, job boards, and profiles that you maintain. Whether it’s a CV that has been uploaded to a job board, or your profile on LinkedIn. Your online and offline persona needs to be needs to be consistent, needs to be accurate, and needs to have attention to detail, so that whatever you are applying for, the application process that you give is the best that you possibly can. What year did you graduate? This is a tricky method of making sense of your age. What's more, age segregation is anything but something to be thankful for. It's been governmentally precluded since 1967 (at any rate as applied to individuals beyond 40 years old). Main concern: you absolutely never need to reveal your age.6. Are you in a union? You reserve an option to join an association and it isn't alright to attempt to restrict you from doing as such. Try not to be interrogated regarding your organization enrollment or goal to gain one, so don't respond to any inquiries that could give that data out.7. Racial segregation is to be disliked. Try not to be a gathering to it.9.Where do you worship?Or: What days do you love? This may be proof of your boss attempting to make sense of what your confidence is. They may be honestly inquisitive on an individual level, yet you are not required toâ€"nor should youâ€"say. It could be a potential methods for strict segregationâ€"and unlawful as per the Civil Rights Act.10. Will you take a polygraph? Most businesses are governmentally not permitted to request that you take a falsehood identifier test as a state of workâ€"or to be terminated, not employed, or taught for can't. You can thank the Employee Polygraph Protection Act of 1988 for this.11. What do you as of now make ?There's another equivalent compensation law in Massachusetts that makes asking this unlawful. In any case, you're not required to answer it anyplace else either! Take a stab at rotating rather with a line like, I'd like to talk about cash somewhat later; at the present time Im simply inspired by whether this is a solid match for the two of us. Im sure we're on the same wavelength.

Why You Should Never Include an Objective Statement on a Resume

Why You Should Never Include an Objective Statement on a Resume Pop quiz: what is the first section on your resume that belongs right below your contact information? Most people would say either the resume summary or the resume objective. (If you came up with a different answer, wed love to see it in the comments!) This post isnt to compare and contrast the resume summary and resume objectivesyou can read that post herebut instead, we want to give our professional opinion. You should never include an objective statement on your resume Why shouldnt I include a resume objective statement? A resume objective will not help you land an interview. A resume objective is outdated, boring, and fails to tell the hiring manager anything of importance.  Putting an ineffective section at the top of your resume isnt helping you out! It could actually be costing you opportunities. Here are the 3 main reasons why you should leave the objective off of your resume: 1. Objective statements offer little value A resume objective provides very little value as it basically tells the employer what your career goals are. The issue is that most hiring managers could care less, they’re interested in what benefits the company. Also, if theyve been hiring people for any length of time, theyve seen every iteration of I need a job, please hire me. Here is an example of an objective statement: I want a highly rewarding career where I can use my skills and knowledge to help the company and my coworkers be successful. Dont we all? Couldnt any person applying for this position say the same thing? 2. Objective statements are boring Starting your resume off with an objective statement will be considered a negative with most hiring managers. You dont say anything that grabs their attention or anything unique about yourself. You may mention skills and knowledge but you dont specify what those are. The resume objective is genericand boring. 3. Resume objectives are outdated The use of an objective statement was once considered standard on resumes because people would stick to one career/position for decades. The hiring manager wanted to see that you would stick around with the company for the long term. That is no longer the case as people are changing jobs faster than ever before. Building a successful career no longer means staying with one company long-term. In short, the resume objective no longer meets the hiring objectives in todays workforce. Introducing: the resume summary Instead of the objective statement, use the top section of your resume on a powerful summary that captures the attention of a hiring manager. Here is an example of one from our post on how to write an awesome resume summary: Marketing director with six years’ experience leading teams in market research and innovative campaign design. Graduate of Number One Marketing University, 2002. In 2013, I led the team that created the You Can’t Say That campaign that won the Bravo Marketing Excellence in Messaging award. I was featured on the cover of Go, Marketing in September, 2014, for my work in launching the Crafty Marketers online forum earlier that year. I am a results-oriented and team-driven leader committed to mentoring new marketers and expanding the boundaries of marketing science and practical application. You can see for yourself that this summary would be a lot more captivating and effective than the possible objective from the same applicant: Looking to obtain a marketing position where I can use my vast experience and skills to really benefit the company. Summary The objective statement is dull, boring and seen as uninspired by many hiring managers. When there are hundreds of applicants competing for a single position, you need to stand out. An objective statement fails to do that and could actually be a reason why you’re not getting interviews. Use a powerful summary that tells the employer a bit about who you are and why youre qualified. The summary also allows you to take a more friendly and conversational tone where an objective doesnt. Use quantifiable achievements and captivating language toconvince the employer that youre the perfect candidate for the position. Good luck with your job search! Friday smorgasbord Moralists, ethicists and philosophers

Friday smorgasbord Moralists, ethicists and philosophers 1. MBAs are the biggest cheaters. More than half of MBA students said they cheated in the last year, according to a survey by the Academy of Management Learning and Education. I started to blog about how people need to change admissions procedures which not only favor cheats but also candidates who hire admissions consultants. But then I read that almost 50% of all graduate students cheat. Not sure what to make of this except that the same problem that makes grad students cheat no ability to separate themselves from their grades is the thing that makes businesspeople cheat so wrapped up in their work that they are willing to sacrifice their morality. So what should you do? Get a life outside of work, outside of school. That way when things go bad, you can remember that you have a life that is separate from what is going bad and you wont feel compelled to cheat to fix it. 2. Ethical leadership means getting enough sleep. I have written before about the importance of getting enough sleep. But Charles Czeisler takes the sleep discussion to a new level in this months Harvard Business Review (subscription): We now know that 24 hours without sleep for a week or sleeping four or five hours a night induces an impairment equivalent to a blood alcohol level of .1%. We would never say, This person is a great worker! Hes drunk all the time! yet we continue to celebrate people who sacrifice sleep for work. He says this sort of behavior puts employees and companies at risk and companies should create strict guidelines for acceptable sleep behavior that function similarly to substance abuse guidelines. What should you do? Face the fact that for most of us, lack of sleep is due to lack of prioritizing, and get better at time management. 3. Cosmo isnt the only place for fun quizzes If you want a quiz about your sex life (or lack thereof) check out Cosmo. But for issues that are (hopefully) more career related, check out the philosophical health quiz. Why do you need to be a solid philosopher to have a solid career? Because knowing yourself is an integral part of figuring out what you want to do. And if your world view is bungled, then your view of yourself is probably bungled as well. What should you do? Take the test.

Virgin Medias Secrets to a Great Candidate Experience

Virgin Medias Secrets to a Great Candidate Experience According to Virgin Medias Employer Branding guru Neil Chivers, delivering a great candidate experience starts with thinking about the end user  and whats going through their thought process when theyre applying for a role. And even actually trying to understand what motivates them to apply for a job. Is it the brand? Is it working for a Virgin brand? Or is it actually about the job that theyre doing and actually the projects that theyre going to get involved with? He believes in taking an individual approach to the candidate experience identifying individual people and opportunities that suit them, that will grow with them. He admits its a difficult task Virgin hires about 3,000 people a year! Trying to tailor that experience  is a huge task, but one thats totally worth it. You can listen to my interview with him below, or read on for a summary of our conversation. Building a great candidate experience I think from my perspective, if I did have that step by step guide, Id be a multi-billionaire and be selling lots of books around the world. But the way I approach things is kind of always thinking about the candidate. We should be putting their needs first. Yes, ultimately were here for jobs and to help our business. But actually, sometimes we dont help ourselves because we dont give the candidates every opportunity that they can be, to be the best that they can be. So always put them first. And I think from the inside out, so think about, as a business, where are we trying to go and what are we trying to achieve? Quite often, when we get hiring managers that come to us saying, I need to recruit for this person. Well, just because somebodys left and you need to replace them doesnt necessarily mean that you should just recruit a like replacement. Actually, its an opportunity to think about the future of the business. Quite often, we are encouraging our stakeholders internally to think about future-proofing our business and actually thinking about whats right for the business, not just today, but in years to come. And another key thing, I think, its just being authentic and being genuine. So one of the things that we have a big challenge with is the sheer volume of applications that we get. And partly because people see the Virgin brand and think, Well, Virgin Media. I know them. Im very familiar with them as an organization. They may be a customer or they may know somebody else that is. And their perception of who we are might not actually match up to the reality. I think as a business, I would encourage any employers out there to just be quite genuine and authentic in the message they put across. And actually, the reality is, youre going to be expected to do some things in your job that actually a lot of candidates wont want to do or cant see themselves doing. Dont be afraid to include that because were looking at the amount of people that are applying for our jobs. And to be quite honest, in some areas, the amount of applications we get just is too high and we want to give people real expectation of what its like to work here. So by being genuine and authentic, I think thats one way of dealing with that. Whats your tech stack for  employer branding and recruiting? Theres quite a few different platforms. Some of the big ones, Avanade is our ATS. We moved to Avanade at the end of 2016, that enables us to source candidates. Its got all of our jobs on. We can sample from it. We can obviously put in analytics to look at source of hire, which is significantly going to help us in terms of identifying where the best talent comes from. In addition to that, we have relationships with LaunchPad that we use for video interviewing. Probably something that well explore a lot more in 2017, actually, how we can get the best out of that, ensuring that the experience that somebody gets using LaunchPad is just as we would expect it to be with them engaging with us on our career site. So changing the look and feel of it so that actually they get a Virgin Media experience, even though theyre using a third-party provider. We have Meet and Engage for our volume recruitment which enables candidates to have live web chats with recruiters. Yocto our partner is there. And weve got a lot of tools at our disposal that we have internally that were trying to leverage those relationships that weve got with our digital team and marketing team. One of them being an employee advocacy platform called Dynamic Signal, which I know a lot of businesses will use to distribute and share content from their employees to their wider networks. And were actually using that to ensure that all employees have access to our Twitter handle and our LinkedIn profiles, so that they can share content and updates that are more career specific and career relevant. And were starting to see some great results from that and we continue to do so into 2017. Follow Neil on Twitter @Chivoir and be sure to subscribe to the Employer Branding Podcast.
